If You See Something, Say Something

Scene: Tired office worker is waiting for the bus home on the Friday afternoon of what has been an extraordinarily busy week.  She stands there as bus after bus passes, but hers is nowhere in sight.  A young guy, a student in a hoodie walks up, flicks his lit cigarette onto the ground, stomps it out, and leaves it there, less than a foot from the trashcan.  He hops onto a waiting bus with the door still open.

“Hey!  You!  There’s a trash can right there.  Literally right there!  Throw your cigarette away instead of just leaving it on the ground!  That’s trash, dude!"

The young guy stares at her from inside the bus, mouth agape, probably shocked that anyone would call him on what we can only assume is a standard practice for him, something he has never given much thought to before.  The office worker continues.

Come on, man!  Trash can! Cigarette! Trash can! Cigarette!

You guys, he got off the bus, picked up the cigarette, threw it away, and got back on.  I thanked him profusely and gave him a high five as he boarded the bus again, which he sheepishly accepted.  As the bus pulled away, the optician from the little store behind the stop walked outside and said “I have never seen anything like that before. That was so awesome!” and gave me a 30% off coupon.

When I told my mom the story later, she said “I’m so proud of you!”

When I told my dad, he said “You’re lucky you didn’t get shot.”

As a (former) smoker it was always an inner, moral battle about throwing my cigarette on the ground. In his defense, sometimes I would get so used to not having available trash cans that it would be a reflex to throw it on the ground even with a bin there (although I would pick it if I noticed it). Luckily I have FINALLY quit smoking for good (this time furrealz!) so I do not have to worry anymore about the environmental consequences of that nasty (and yet delightful) habit.

Bravo! More people need to speak up when we see people being jerks. That kid will think twice next time before littering.

Your dad's comment made me laugh. Because, I've had similar thoughts in the past. You see, Sweets once witnessed a car stopped at a light in our (your) old hood. There was a trash can on the corner. The passenger threw a McDonald's bag out the window. Sweets picked up the bag, marched up to the car and threw the bag back in yelling there's a trash can on the corner and shame on you for littering and blah blah blah. It was a teenager who threw the bag out and his mom (the driver) supposedly started yelling at him for littering (after Sweets approached the car). I kept thinking Sweets was lucky he didn't get shot. hahaha.

That said, I'm also a proponent of speaking up ... it's so ridiculous how many people just don't care and don't pay attention to the worlds around them.

All I have to say to this entire thing is HAHAHAHAHA. An extra HAHAHA to your dad's comment. I love it. I often want to call people out on things like that but never do. Good for you!

I almost got out of my car at a stop light the other day when someone threw their bag out of their car. I was with Knight and it wasn't the best area so he suggested I not do it, so I didn't (so that I wouldn't get shot or beat or something). I'm glad you did, though and even more, I'm glad it worked. I don't understand people's laziness or disregard for things sometimes...

Good for you. I have to admit, I saw two girls stand right in front of me, eat their McDonald's hamburgers and then throw the wrappers on the street and I didn't say anything. They were both WAY bigger than me. I am in your Dad's camp!

Good for you for calling him out on it. I totally would not have had to the guts to do that because I am a total chicken honestly. But good for you!!
