If you'll remember, one of my new years resolutions was to try new things. Well, for the first time since college, I have been participating in group exercise classes that are included in the membership fee at my new gym. My first love is still running, but I figured I would try out all the classes they offered and see what I liked best so that I could incorporate more indoor cross training into my routine. I haven't been to spin yet and I discovered that Body Pump is intense enough to make me, the girl who likes to smugly think she's in pretty good cardiovascular shape, feel like I'm going to throw up in the first fifteen minutes because of the sheer amount of effort it takes to bounce around that hard, but then I found Zumba. You guys, it is so awesome. What is Zumba? Well, officially it's "an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that’s moving millions of people toward joy and health." Basically you dance around a studio for an hour to some seriously fun music and call it a workout. I pretty much love it.
You know sometimes you'll be watching a movie and the people in the movie suddenly break out into a super fun, perfectly choreographed dance routine? And how you wish that happened more in real life? Zumba is kind of like that. If you're not terribly coordinated, don't worry because about half the people in the classes I've been too aren't either, and the (super nice, super cute and very coordinated) teacher always mentions a little disclaimer about how we're all here to have fun, no judgment, thanks. If you are coordinated, you'll totally rock it and look amazing doing so. If you wish you were coordinated but seemed to have lost all ability to follow a routine and are determined to gain back that skill even though you haven't been on a dance team in ten years (cough high school's over Marisa cough) then this class is pretty much perfect for you.
If you have the chance, I highly recommend trying out a Zumba class or two. Next week: spin class?

I miss having a gym membership as I miss taking classes like this! Bodypump was my favorite class at the Y! Maybe eventually I will get a membership again so I can attend those kind of classes. I only took 1 zumba class and didn't go back as I felt like it wasn't a great workout, but I think I must have taken a bad class as everyone else raves about it!
All your gym updates and zumba mentions are making me seriously consider joining a gym! I've never tried zumba but it sounds amazeballs.
Also, spin: do it. It will kill you in the best way ever.
the zumba class i attended was one of the most embarrassing things i've ever done. this one, i guess they learned part of the routine every week and i must have showed up near the end, because there was NO teaching/explaining, just dancing to choreography i assume (hope) everyone else had already learned, and i was the white girl flailing around in the back trying to keep up while also gyrating my white, white hips in time to the music.
it was not good. :)
Zumba is actually offered at the wee little gym we just joined. I can't attend this Saturday morning, but maybe I'll pencil it in my calendar for next Saturday morning.
I think Zumba sounds like so much fun but I am so intimidated to try it! This post gave me some courage though.
